Ferrari's Perfect Practice Record, Hamilton Tops FP3
Ahead of the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Ferrari have maintained their dominance across the practice sessions. In the third free practice (FP3), Lewis Hamilton set the only sub-1m35s time of 1m34.893s to take top spot, while his teammate Charles Leclerc finished third. Leclerc's medium-tyre lap of 1m35.127s was just 0.23s adrift of Hamilton's soft-tyre benchmark, indicating that Ferrari's SF car still has considerable potential to unlock in qualifying.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished second with a medium-tyre lap of 1m35.061s. Red Bull were the quickest car through sector one, underlining their strength in the low-speed technical sections. However, Verstappen repeated his complaints about unsettling downshifts, which could be a concern for qualifying and the race. Meanwhile, his teammate Isack Hadjar finished tenth and appeared frustrated by the handling, raising questions over the competitiveness of Red Bull's second car.
The session was challenging for Mercedes. Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished fourth, while George Russell was fifth. The team's pace is considered roughly half a step behind their rivals. Antonelli had a time deleted for a track-limits violation at Turn 9, which was a major issue in this session.
The situation remained unclear for McLaren. Oscar Piastri finished sixth, but his MCL40 was described as difficult to tame. World champion Lando Norris was eighth and his 1m35.2s lap was deleted for a track-limits infringement at Turn 10. This makes it difficult to assess McLaren's true pace.
Among the other competitors, Audi's Nico Hulkenberg finished seventh, ahead of both McLarens, which is a positive sign. Alpine's Pierre Gasly was ninth but around a second off the top time. Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson also took part in the session.
Track limits were the dominant theme of this practice session. Several drivers had times deleted at Turns 9 and 10, including Antonelli, Leclerc and Norris. This is a characteristic of the Circuit of the Americas, where obeying the white line can influence the qualifying outcome more than raw pace.
Overall, Ferrari have built a strong position in practice, but the gaps between Red Bull, Mercedes and McLaren are very small. Track limits and tyre strategy could prove decisive in qualifying. Ferrari's true potential on soft tyres has not yet been shown, as Leclerc set his time on the medium compound. Verstappen's downshift issue and the weakness of Red Bull's second car could increase their challenge. Mercedes hold the championship lead but their pace deficit is a concern. McLaren need to work on their car's balance. Track limits could shuffle the grid order in qualifying, so teams must remain vigilant.
